At NQCC, Infleqtion unveils UK’s 100 qubit quantum computer

Overview

Infleqtion installed the Sqale platform at the National Quantum Computing Centre(NQCC), creating the UK’s first 100-qubit quantum computer. This achievement switches the national quantum strategy’s focus from theoretical research to real-world applications and intensive experimentation. The system offers a strong foundation for evaluating sophisticated algorithms and error correction in domains such as materials research and energy management by employing neutral-atom technology.

In addition to giving British researchers vital high-performance gear, its deployment strengthens the UK’s position as the world leader in autonomous quantum capabilities. In the upcoming years, the business hopes to use this foundation to achieve fault-tolerant computing with more than 100 logical qubits. All of these advancements point to a critical shift for the quantum ecosystem toward practical commercial use.

Infleqtion has officially delivered the country’s sole functional 100-physical-qubit quantum computing machine, solidifying the UK’s leadership in the worldwide quantum race. Powered by Infleqtion’s Sqale platform, the system was installed at the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) and is a significant accomplishment in the UK’s national quantum plan. This deployment, completed successfully in December 2025, gives academics and business executives the fundamental infrastructure they need to go from theoretical models to large-scale quantum experiments.

A Turning Point in National Strategy

In addition to being a technical achievement, the 100-qubit system’s delivery fulfills a key goal set by the NQCC for the UK’s technological future. The development is a “significant milestone” that moves the UK beyond lab research and into practical applications, according to Lord Vallance, Minister of State for Science, Research, and Innovation. Lord Vallance claims that these developments will strengthen the UK’s position as a global leader in “one of the defining technologies of our generation” and open the door to real advantages for the populace and the economy.

A key element of the NQCC’s larger Quantum Computing Testbed Initiative is the deployment of the Sqale platform. This project aims to provide a controlled environment for the UK quantum community to evaluate system performance, benchmark various applications, and investigate the feasibility of scaling neutral-atom systems. The NQCC’s director, Dr. Michael Cuthbert, stressed that the community can “move beyond small demonstrations and begin learning what it really takes to operate and scale quantum computers in practice” with a system this size.

The Power of Neutral-Atom Technology

The neutral-atom design of Infleqtion is the key to this innovation. Neutral-atom systems use individual atoms kept in situ and controlled by lasers as qubits, in contrast to other quantum computing techniques like superconducting circuits or trapped ions. These atoms provide a very flexible and adaptable method for creating large-scale computers since they are similar by nature and can be precisely assembled with light.

In quantum hardware, gate integrity is one of the most important criteria. Infleqtion has reported an industry-leading two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.73%. This is important because the main obstacle to scaling toward “logical” qubits, reliable, error-proof units of information, is the performance of physical qubits. A single logical qubit may be encoded with fewer physical qubits with higher fidelity, which greatly improves scalability and operational effectiveness.

Closing the Distance to Real-World Use

In the business, reaching the 100-physical-qubit level is commonly regarded as a “tipping point.” At this scale, quantum computers start to enable algorithms and error-correction tests that are directly applicable to real-world problems, going beyond basic laboratory prototypes. NQCC researchers will now be able to investigate applications in a variety of sectors, such as:

  • Materials Science: Finding stronger, lighter, and more effective materials at a faster pace.
  • Energy Systems: For a more sustainable future, grid management and energy exploration are optimized.
  • Complex Optimization: Resolving financial modeling and logistical issues that traditional supercomputers are now unable to handle.

According to Matthew Kinsella, CEO of Infleqtion, the Sqale platform demonstrates the enormous “progress and potential” of neutral-atom architecture. It places Infleqtion at the forefront of hardware development as it is the first platform of its sort and scale to be installed in a functional national facility.

A Fault-Tolerance Road Map

An important phase in Infleqtion’s ambitious technological plan is the delivery to the NQCC. The business intends to offer more than 100 logical qubits by 2028 and hopes to surpass 30 logical qubits by 2026. The goal of this pathway is to develop fully fault-tolerant architectures, which are required for the most intricate quantum calculations.

The capacity of inflection to transfer technology from the lab to the field is already well-established. In the past, the business has worked with NASA and the US Department of War, put optical atomic clocks on underwater autonomous vehicles, and carried out groundbreaking quantum flying demonstrations. Additionally, their partnership with NVIDIA produced the first-ever demonstration of a logical qubit application in materials research.

Developing Sovereign Skills

This deployment is about developing sovereign quantum capabilities, not simply hardware, for the United Kingdom. The occasion was a “defining moment” for the nation’s aspirations, according to Colin Sullivan, Managing Director of Information UK. The platform aims to expedite supply-chain preparedness and talent development within the whole UK quantum ecosystem.

The system will act as a lighthouse for both internal and international cooperation once it is fully functional. The NQCC and Infleqtion are making sure that the UK continues to be a key location for the next industrial revolution, the quantum era, by offering the means for performance evaluation and useful research.
