Institute for Quantum Innovation Launch by Vanderbilt & EPB

The Institute for Quantum Innovation is established by EPB and Vanderbilt University, establishing Tennessee as a national center for technology.

Institute for Quantum Innovation (IQI)

In an effort to advance quantum research and technology, EPB of Chattanooga and Vanderbilt University have formally announced their intention to launch the Institute for Quantum Innovation (IQI). The goal of this partnership is to establish Tennessee and Chattanooga as a national center for quantum workforce development, commercialization, and research. The IQI will serve as a hub for graduate-level instruction, research, and innovation in quantum and related subjects. The collaboration is set up to expedite discoveries straight from the research stage to practical implementations.

A New Academic Presence and Unique Infrastructure

With cooperative access to the EPB Quantum Centre, the Institute for Quantum Innovation unites Vanderbilt University’s top research and quantum nanophotonic programs. The EPB Quantum Centre stands out as the first facility in the country to provide commercial access to a local quantum network based on photonics and a trapped-ion quantum computer.

With clearance from the accrediting body, Vanderbilt intends to open an academic research and innovation campus in Chattanooga to support ongoing collaboration. Faculty, staff, and graduate programs will be able to collaborate closely with EPB, the new campus’s on-site location. Students and researchers will have practical access to EPB’s distinctive quantum and energy infrastructure through this partnership.

This partnership combines Vanderbilt’s extensive experience in quantum research and graduate education with EPB’s distinctive infrastructure, according to Vicky Gregg, EPB Board Chair. “World-class ideas can move quickly from the lab to real-world applications” in the collaborative environment at the EPB Quantum Centre, she noted. It is anticipated that this will open the door for innovations that improve the security, affordability, and resilience of energy services for consumers.

Translating Quantum Research to Real-World Impact

The IQI’s primary goal is to convert quantum research into useful applications in several vital industries. Energy, national security, health, logistics, insurance, medicine, science, and vital infrastructure are just a few of the fields that will benefit from the partnership. Daniel Diermeier, Chancellor of Vanderbilt University, emphasized that quantum innovation has the potential to significantly improve everything from cybersecurity and energy distribution to medicine and research in general.

The top-notch teachers and students at Vanderbilt will work to advance fields like quantum and nanophotonics for sensing and communication. Additionally, they will concentrate on AI and quantum information systems designed for secure energy systems of the future. In particular, early research will focus on quantum sensing and communication technologies used to create safe and reliable energy networks. This work’s background is important because, according to a recent McKinsey Quantum Technology Monitor prediction, quantum technologies might add up to $2 trillion in value to current businesses by 2035.

Driving Economic Growth and Workforce Development

It is anticipated that the Institute will promote startup formation, local job generation, and overall economic growth in Chattanooga and throughout Tennessee. Entrepreneurial growth has already been stimulated by EPB’s infrastructural leadership, which includes the establishment of the country’s first community-wide fiber-optic network and sophisticated automated power grid. Between 2026 and 2035, the local community is anticipated to benefit from up to $1 billion in value from EPB’s quantum efforts.

Vanderbilt will create and offer graduate-level academic programs that give students practical experience in quantum domains and related technologies like cybersecurity and artificial intelligence in order to guarantee a competent workforce. In collaboration with regional organizations, the university will also offer industry-integrated training programs that enable certification and upskilling. Chancellor Diermeier, this will place Vanderbilt at the vanguard of developments that will influence problem-solving and computing in the upcoming decades.

The economic potential was highlighted by local officials. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly, the quantum innovation center will boost startups and draw in new jobs while providing local companies with access to infrastructure and research skills. Weston Wamp, the mayor of Hamilton County, stated that the collaboration will boost the innovation ecosystem and establish new high-skilled career routes.

Strengthening National Priorities

The new partnership has received strong support from federal and state politicians, who recognize its importance in tackling key national issues, especially cybersecurity and global economic competitiveness. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, the IQI will improve the state’s energy infrastructure, invest in its highly qualified labor force, and generate excellent jobs.

U.S. Senator Blackburn says the collaboration will strengthen infrastructure, protect communications, and give America a technological edge over Communist China. U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann said the alliance will speed quantum computing advances that protect essential infrastructure and promote national security, making Tennessee a leader. Senator Bill Hagerty of the United States described the launch as a potent illustration of Tennessee’s leadership in technological advancement.

One of Vanderbilt’s strategic “dare to grow” programs, this Institute gives academics and students new opportunities for research translation and industry engagement while also increasing the university’s position in high-impact domains.
