Israeli Tower Semiconductor with Xanadu for Photonic Quantum

The Canadian quantum company Xanadu and semiconductor manufacturer Tower Semiconductor have announced a significant expansion of their partnership to develop photonic quantum hardware. Moving quantum designs from the experimental stage into high-volume manufacturing settings is the main goal of this expanded partnership. Using Tower’s silicon photonics technology, both companies are co-engineering a fault-tolerant material stack. This strategic alliance aims to improve integrated photodiodes and low-loss circuits’ performance and scalability. The joint venture ultimately supplies the industrial base needed to construct large-scale, commercially feasible quantum computers. This advancement highlights the quantum industry’s increasing maturity as it approaches mass production.

A history of successful combined “tapeouts” and technological synergy between the two businesses preceded the announcement. To prepare for the current push toward commercial-scale manufacture, the teams were able to thoroughly test and improve Xanadu’s advanced photonic designs inside Tower Semiconductor’s current process at these early stages.

A Distinct Manufacturing Process for Quantum Hardware

The co-engineering of a distinctive manufacturing flow designed especially for Xanadu’s proprietary material stack is the foundation of this partnership. The architecture compatibility and manufacturing alignment of this specific stack guarantee that quantum systems maintain their scalability without compromising performance as their complexity increases.

One of the biggest challenges facing the quantum industry is the shift from lab prototypes to large-scale, manufacturable information processing devices, which the partners are tackling by incorporating these breakthroughs into a high-volume foundry setting. Xanadu’s founder and CEO, Christian Weedbrook, highlighted that this collaboration has been “instrumental” in advancing their hardware through the crucial phases of development, from early concepts to prototypes and, ultimately, demonstration systems.

Weedbrook said, “We are laying the groundwork for a truly useful quantum computer by fusing Tower’s world-class technology and manufacturing expertise with our architectural breakthroughs, fabrication process engineering, and design innovations.”

Focus on Technology: Integrated Photodiodes and Ultra-Low Loss Silicon Nitride

As the fundamental building blocks of photonic circuits, the optimization of these components is the main focus of current development efforts. The teams are specifically focusing on:

  • Silicon nitride (SiN) with ultra-low loss: Essential for preserving the integrity of quantum signals throughout circuit transmission.
  • Integrated photodiodes: necessary for the quantum system’s high-performance measurement and detection.

By leveraging regular product processes to generate these components, Xanadu is able to verify its innovative designs on a platform that has previously been shown to produce significant volumes. According to Dr. Ed Preisler, vice president and general manager of Tower Semiconductor’s RF Business Unit, Xanadu’s design is one of the most scalable in the sector.

Preisler went on to say that this partnership validates Tower’s silicon photonics platform’s wide range of applications in high-tech industries, such as data centers, telecommunications, and automotive applications, and goes beyond simply advancing quantum computing.

The Global Reach of Tower Semiconductor

The relationship benefits from the vast worldwide infrastructure that Tower Semiconductor contributes. Tower, a top analogue solution foundry, offers process platforms for a range of expanding industries, such as industrial, medical, mobile, aerospace, and military. Their technical portfolio is broad and includes integrated power management, MEMS, SiPho, SiGe, BiCMOS, and CMOS image sensors.

The business runs a strong network of production sites to provide multi-fab sourcing and increased capacity for its international customers:

  • One 200mm facility in Israel.
  • Two 200mm facilities are located in the US.
  • Japan: 51% stake in TPSCo allows for the construction of two 200mm and 300mm facilities.
  • Italy: STMicroelectronics shares a 300mm plant at Agrate.

The Mission of Xanadu and Software Leadership

Since its founding in 2016, Xanadu has quickly become a leader in the field of quantum hardware and software. Making quantum computers that are practical and available to a worldwide audience is the Canadian company’s main goal.

In addition to Tower Semiconductor’s hardware advancements, Xanadu is a significant participant in the quantum software ecosystem. The business is in charge of creating PennyLane, a popular open-source software library for creating applications and quantum computing. In the competition to develop fault-tolerant quantum computing, Xanadu is positioned as a full-stack leader with its twin emphasis on software accessibility and hardware scalability.
