LANL’s Center for Quantum Computing to Advance Moore’s Law

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has formally created the Center for Quantum Computing in an essential move to consolidate its expanding capabilities in next-generation technologies. This new building, which is situated in downtown Los Alamos, is a calculated attempt to bring the laboratory’s several quantum research projects together under one roof to promote more cooperation and creativity.

The Center for Quantum Computing

More than just a physical move, the creation of the Center for Quantum Computing is a connection of the Laboratory’s diverse capabilities in workforce development, quantum algorithms, quantum computer science, and national security applications. The Laboratory hopes to unite up to thirty quantum researchers who were previously dispersed across different departments by establishing a single research area.

This “center of excellence” is intended to integrate research capabilities that serve the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense, and New Mexico state efforts, according to Mark Chadwick, assistant Laboratory director for Simulation, Computing, and Theory. Chadwick said the goal is to create a “critical mass of expertise” that overcomes the limitations of individual research teams, especially to assist the next generation of US scientific and technology innovation. As quantum technology becomes a cornerstone of Los Alamos operations, this strategic synergy is vital.

Pivotal Timing and Strategic Partnerships

The founding of the center comes at what Laboratory officials characterize as a “pivotal time” for the development of quantum technology. As the area advances closer to practical completion, LANL researchers are actively cooperating with the private sector and engaging in a range of state and federal programs.

The researchers within the new center are working on various high-profile initiatives, including:

  • The DARPA Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, which focuses on defining measurements for quantum performance.
  • The DOE’s Quantum research Center, a significant federal endeavor to improve quantum information research.
  • The “Beyond Moore’s Law” effort of the NNSA Advanced Simulation and Computing program studies computing paradigms when silicon-based scalability reaches its physical constraints.
  • Internal investments in cutting-edge research through many Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects.

Cultivating the Next Generation: The Quantum Summer School

A fundamental component of the new center’s goal is workforce development, ensuring that the U.S. remains competitive in the global quantum race. To do this, the facility will host the esteemed 10-week fellowship program known as the Quantum Computing Summer School.

This curriculum is meant to connect undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in quantum research with the theoretical underpinnings of the area. Students acquire hands-on experience in programming commercial quantum computers, a skill set that is increasingly in demand. The school now enrols up to 25 students each year, offering a direct funnel for talent into the Laboratory’s research ecosystem.

Carleton Coffrin, the Laboratory’s quantum science coordinator, indicated high levels of hope regarding the merger of these teams. He emphasized that while the individual teams are currently “world-leading in their specific domain expertise,” the new environment will stimulate “further collaboration and united effort” that will assist the teams accomplish big advances.

The Broader Scientific Context

The development of the Center for Quantum Computing is part of a wider trend of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI) breakthroughs at Los Alamos. The Laboratory has lately seen notable advancements in linked sectors, such as:

  • Using quantum computers to answer century-old mathematical difficulties.
  • The deployment of frontier AI models on the Venado supercomputer, which has completed a “yearlong voyage” to enable crucial AI science.
  • Finding a new path to quantum machine learning, which combines the Laboratory’s quantum and AI capabilities.

These interconnected efforts demonstrate the Laboratory’s commitment to leading the “Beyond Moore’s Law” future of quantum and AI-driven computing.

Considering the Future

In addition to promoting internal cooperation, the Laboratory’s new location in downtown Los Alamos puts it in a better position to engage with the community and business partners. As quantum technology draws closer to being a revolutionary force in national security and scientific discovery, the Center for Quantum Computing stands as a testimony to the Laboratory’s long-term commitment to technological leadership.

For anyone interested in monitoring the progress of the center or other LANL activities, the Laboratory produces a newsletter to deliver the latest news and feature stories on these developing technologies. The Laboratory document number LA-UR-26-20682 is used to formally identify the new facility.
