Pakistan’s Inaugural National Quantum Computing Hackathon

National Quantum Computing Hackathon

Pakistan’s first National Quantum Computing Hackathon will take place February 6–8, 2026. This is significant for local science. The three-day event at the National Centre for Physics (NCP) in Islamabad represents a turning moment in Pakistan’s mission to integrate cutting-edge technologies into its development framework.

A Cooperative Scientific Project

The hackathon was inspired by Pakistan’s top scientific institutes’ collaboration. PIEAS and NILOP, both PAEC members, are assembling it. Main venue and partner the National Center for Physics (NCP) helps with technical and organizational aspects of the event.

International support distinguishes the effort beyond domestic cooperation. CERN and OQI support the hackathon. These partnerships are part of UN-backed science diplomacy to connect emerging technology to global development needs.

Competitive Selection and Technical Access

The event has created great interest within Pakistan’s academic and scientific communities, drawing more than 950 applications from throughout the nation. This spike in interest reflects a developing curiosity and skill pool in quantum technologies among the country’s youth.

Following a thorough selection process, just 42 people were shortlisted to compete. These finalists have been split up into seven specialized teams, each of which is charged with creating quantum-based solutions for challenging real-world problems.

A distinctive element of this hackathon is the level of technical immersion offered to the participants. This event gives attendees hands-on experience with quantum processing units, unlike theoretical courses. For added support, the teams will have a group of national and foreign experts work with them as mentors to make sure their projects are in line with current research standards around the world.

Global Problem-Solving using Quantum Innovation

The hackathon aims to integrate quantum innovation with UN SDGs. Organizers have told teams to prioritize healthcare, sustainable energy, and climate change. By applying quantum algorithms to these areas, the event intends to demonstrate how advanced computing may address challenges that are currently beyond the scope of classical binary systems.

The initiatives will be evaluated by an international jury of specialists from the United States, Switzerland, and Pakistan. A globally competitive evaluation level is ensured by this varied panel. Winners of the tournament stand to gain substantial accolades, including:

  • Cash rewards and formal certifications from CERN.
  • Technical mentoring and recognition for top-tier projects.
  • Requests to showcase their research at the esteemed International Nathiagalli Summer College.

Strengthening the National Research Ecosystem

Many believe the hackathon will strengthen Pakistan’s quantum research atmosphere. The event brings together early-career researchers, students, and innovators in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Physics to build a quantum-literate community.

The projected participation of top leadership shows the event’s institutional weight. Ministers of Foreign Affairs, IT and Telecommunications, the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, and different provincial governments are planning to send high-level officials to the opening events. This amount of state involvement indicates a national commitment to making Pakistan competitive in the global quantum scene.

A Step Toward a National Quantum Centre

This initial hackathon is a prelude to bigger long-term aims. Plans are underway to build a National Centre for Quantum Computing with foreign partners, sources say. Such an institution would consolidate the country’s position in the frontier technology sector and create a stable platform for innovation.

By encouraging exceptional young minds to interact with real-world quantum difficulties now, Pakistan is positioning itself to establish an inventive and sustainable quantum community for the future. The National Quantum Computing Hackathon stands as a monument to the country’s commitment to bridge the digital divide and use cutting-edge science for national and global prosperity.
