Raith, German Quantum Fabrication Leader, Urges €1 B Sale

German Quantum Fabrication Powerhouse Raith’s Billion-Euro Bet: €1 B Sale in the Works

A sale is apparently being considered by Raith, a leader in the nanofabrication of hardware for quantum computing with headquarters in Dortmund. The company may have a €1 billion market value, and its private-equity owner, Capiton AG, has directed UBS to assess interest.

The introduction

According to reports, the German precision nanofabrication company Raith GmbH, which is essential to the supply chain for quantum computing, is considering a sale that would make the company worth about €1 billion. Bringing in strategic purchasers seeking to get long-term access to highly specialized technology, the possible merger might change the industrial quantum hardware landscape.

The Strategic Role of Raith in Quantum Computation

The Dortmund-based company Raith is a major supplier of nanofabrication equipment, including as focused ion beam (FIB) systems, electron beam lithography (EBL), and other nanoengineering platforms. For the production of incredibly tiny, highly precise structures like superconducting circuits or nanoscale qubit components that are employed in quantum computing hardware, these technologies are essential.

Research institutes, universities, and tech companies that are pushing the boundaries of quantum gadget development employ their systems. In an ecosystem that is complicated and changing quickly, Raith has established a niche by providing the instruments required to create and test next-generation quantum components.

The Growing Role of Raith in the Quantum Era

As scalable designs for quantum computing replace experimental prototypes, there is an increasing demand for nanofabricated devices that are more precise, stable, and smaller than before. Raith’s technologies allow for the reproducible, research-grade accuracy of fabricating nanoscale features, frequently below 10 nanometers.

The following recent developments are fueling greater interest in Raith:

  • Superconducting Qubit Extension: Precision lithography is crucial for Josephson junctions and resonator designs in companies creating superconducting quantum processors.
  • Photonic nanocavities and incredibly fine semiconductor architectures are essential for emerging qubit modalities, such as spin.
  • Cryocompatible Nanostructures: As quantum computing integration grows, reliable nanostructures operating at extremely low temperatures are needed.
  • Quantum Security and Sensing Raith’s technologies facilitate fabrication procedures for quantum communication chips, single-photon emitters, and nanoscale sensing devices.

The strategic importance of Raith in the quantum-technology value chain keeps growing as demand rises.

Reasons for the Sale

According to reports, UBS Group AG is collaborating with Capiton AG, Raith’s present owner, to investigate a possible exit. According to those with knowledge of the matter, Capiton has contacted potential purchasers, indicating that a deal might be imminent.

Raith’s strategic significance and advantageous location are reflected in the estimated €1 billion valuation. It would represent a significant departure for Capiton, which made its initial investment in Raith in 2016.

The Potential Interest of Buyers

There are several reasons why Raith is a desirable asset:

  • Supply-Chain Leverage: Businesses that manufacture quantum devices keep their upstream supply chains vulnerable. Possession of a vital supplier such as Raith may allow prospective purchasers greater influence over production and innovation.
  • Deep-Tech Value: The tools used by Raith are very precise, highly specialized devices rather than generic machinery. Having this capacity gives long-term players a competitive edge.
  • Private Equity Exit: Given the rising industrial usage of quantum technology and the rising valuation of companies related to quantum, Capiton probably views this as a favourable time to cash out.
  • Growth in Quantum Demand: The need for nanofabricated components is expected to increase as quantum computing advances, which might support a high valuation.

Large U.S. technology companies may be potential purchasers, according to sources. For these businesses, Raith may be seen as a strategic asset for scaling quantum hardware rather than merely a provider.

The Background: The Quantum Strategy of Capiton

In addition to Raith, Capiton is dedicated to quantum. They closed Capiton Quantum, a €248 million continuation fund, in 2023 with the support of prestigious secondary investors.

With the help of this fund, Raith and other deep-tech companies like AEMtec can expand their capacity, make additional capital investments in nanotechnology, and possibly make bolt-on acquisitions.

Raith’s technological presence should be expanded, and Capiton wants to maximize its exit value by leveraging quantum industry tailwinds.

Effects on a Wider Market

  • Increasing Quantum Infrastructure in Europe: Raith is a component of Europe’s quantum sovereignty, which the continent has been eager to develop. A buyer with a global perspective may purchase it, which could encourage more international investments in the quantum ecosystem.
  • The consolidation of industries: If Raith is acquired by large tech companies, the design, manufacture, and deployment of quantum hardware may become more integrated; this trend of consolidation is comparable to what is currently seeing in semiconductors.
  • Signals of Validation: In addition to “qubit makers,” a €1 billion price tag indicates strong investor confidence in quantum-tech supply chain companies. This highlights the importance of enabling infrastructure.

Dangers and Obstacles

The possibilities are exciting, but there are a few things to be aware of:

  • Execution Risk: Nanoscale fabrication is renowned for being challenging. It’s difficult to scale tools for mass production.
  • The Quantum Cycle: Investing in fabrication tools may decrease if demand for quantum computers declines.
  • It is not always possible for a buyer to successfully integrate a highly specialized hardware company into their operations.

An Overview of the Future

If the sale goes through:

Raith’s acquisition might provide major tech businesses direct access to cutting-edge nanopatterning.

Profits could be invested in R&D, cleanroom expansion, or nanophotonics or advanced semiconductors.

Valuing enabling deep-tech firms at or above the billion-euro mark, rather than just the qubit-makers themselves, may be a precedent-setting move.
