ESL Shipping Ltd & QMill Companys Fleet Optimization project

ESL Shipping Ltd and QMill company

ESL Shipping Ltd and QMill company have officially announced a multi-year research and development partnership aimed at revolutionizing maritime logistics through quantum computing. The initiative, “Smart Fleet Optimization,” uses advanced computational tools to address the complex planning and decision-making difficulties in modern shipping.

The agreement comes as the shipping sector faces growing pressure to balance operational efficiency with high environmental goals. By combining innovative optimization models with operational data, the partners want to revolutionize fleet management in the Baltic region and beyond.

Addressing the Complexity of Tramp Trade

The Smart Ship Optimization project focuses on tramp trade ships, which have no fixed schedules or routes. Kirsi Ylärinne, Climate & Sustainability Director at ESL Shipping, acknowledges the specific challenges of this climate.

Ylärinne shows that fleet planning in tramp trade shipping is hard and involves dynamic variables. The project aims to balance many requirements, including cargo flows, capacity limits, emissions targets, and commercial goals. The objective is to assess the effectiveness of new optimization methods in supporting everyday operations and long-term emission reductions.

An Innovative Hybrid Method

In response to these problems, ESL Shipping has teamed with QMill, an Espoo-based quantum algorithm and software startup. QMill companyfocuses on making quantum computing accessible for industrial use cases, targeting the NISQ era.

The study focuses on evaluating quantum computing’s optimisation potential using ESL Shipping’s operational data. The cooperation is using quantum-classical hybrid optimization methods instead of expecting a future “perfect” quantum computer.

Ville Kotovirta, CTO at QMill, highlights the value of integrating QMill’s quantum-classical hybrid optimization algorithms with ESL Shipping’s operational data, delivering immediate business value and unlocking greater value as quantum hardware matures. The hybrid technique, combining classical and quantum computers, is an innovative approach in ocean technology.

Structured Research and Public Support

The Smart Transport Optimization project involves organized R&D, including modeling, validation, and collaboration between technical specialists and company members.

The initiative has received major support from Business Finland, partly funded. With this support, enterprises may explore the long-term possibilities of quantum computing in a controlled and realistic manner, integrating research with the operational demands of a large shipping carrier.

About the Partners

The partnership brings together two very different but complementary Finnish entities.

ESL Shipping Ltd

ESL Shipping, a subsidiary of Aspo Plc, is the top dry bulk carrier in the Baltic region. For 75 years, ESL Shipping and its sister company AtoB@C Shipping have been transporting raw materials for industry and energy production, even in harsh Baltic weather. Their fleet of 40 ships ranges from 4,000 to 25,000 dwt. They offer specialized services like loading and unloading huge ocean liners at sea.

Qmill Quantum

QMill specializes in practical quantum software, creating algorithms for industrial applications on current and future hardware. While currently working with ESL Shipping on transport, the company develops technology for various important areas such as defense, energy, and telecommunications.

Considering the Future

The initiative promotes “hybrid” value, yet its long-term effects are huge. Current research in Espoo might lead the way for the worldwide ship sector to convert to a digital, optimized, and low-emission future as quantum hardware advances.

ESL Shipping invests in quantum research to be relevant in the Baltic. For QMill, this is a crucial validation of their NISQ-era algorithms in a challenging logistical setting. The sea world will monitor the multi-year study to see if the “Smart Fleet” of tomorrow is led by quantum results.
