China Releases Origin Pilot Quantum OS For Global Developers

China Breaks New Ground in Quantum Frontier with Release of “Origin Pilot” Operating System

China has formally made its first in-house created quantum computer operating system, Origin Pilot, available for public online download, marking a significant change in the global landscape of quantum computing. The release, which was made public by the Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center, is a major step forward in China’s continuous pursuit of technological independence and its strategic goal of dominating the “future industries” of the twenty-first century.

The “Soft Heart” of the Quantum Ecosystem

For a long time, the hardware, the actual chips and qubits that carry out computations, has been the main focus of quantum computing research. Experts stress that hardware is not enough on its own, though. The operating system is the “soft heart” of the whole ecosystem of quantum computing, according to Guo Guoping, head of the Anhui research center and chief scientist of Origin Quantum.

A quantum operating system is the crucial layer in charge of overseeing essential operations; it is more than just a user interface. The research center claims that Origin Pilot manages intricate duties, including scheduling resources and ensuring that hardware and software components work together. The OS greatly increases the system’s overall efficiency by automating procedures like qubit calibration and permitting the parallel execution of quantum activities, bringing quantum computing one step closer to useful, real-world implementation.

A Global First in Open-Source Access

The quantum race has long been led by global tech behemoths like Google and IBM, but their strategies have mostly stayed bound to private cloud infrastructures. The Anhui research center points out that although these US companies offer cloud services and quantum programming frameworks, their underlying operating systems are not publicly available for download or local implementation.

This is broken by Origin Pilot, the first open-source quantum computer operating system available for public download worldwide, created by the Hefei-based Origin Quantum Computing Technology Co. With this ruling, China’s quantum economy is undergoing a significant shift from “closed-door” technological innovation to a more expansive, open-source ecosystem. It is a “key step in advancing coordinated national development efforts” to encourage the effective flow of innovative resources for the benefit of academics and developers around the world, according to Guo Guoping.

Technical Versatility and Cross-Platform Integration

Origin Pilot’s combined quantum-classical-intelligent architecture is among its most remarkable aspects. Because of its hardware-agnostic nature, the operating system works with the main physical approaches that are now ruling the industry. This comprises:

  • Superconducting qubits
  • Trapped ions
  • Neutral atoms

The OS enables users to swiftly integrate with quantum processors of various physical types, according to Dou Menghan, the director of the research team. Developers may carry out quantum computing tasks on various physical quantum devices by using autonomous programming frameworks such as QPanda. This meets the needs of both advanced academic research and expanding commercialization. Origin Pilot lowers the entrance criteria for new developers by assisting users in overcoming conventional technical barriers in core quantum software through the provision of a standardized driver system and a uniform programming interface.

Strategic Alignment: The 15th Five-Year Plan

Origin Pilot’s launch is a key element of China’s national economic plan, not a stand-alone accomplishment. As stated clearly in the Recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) for National Economic and Social Development, quantum technology has been given top attention.

One of six “industries of the future” that are distinguished by their strategic significance, disruptive potential, and foresight is quantum technology. These industries include the following and are meant to act as fresh catalysts for economic growth in the country:

  • Quantum technology
  • Biomanufacturing
  • Hydrogen and nuclear fusion power
  • Brain-computer interfaces
  • Embodied artificial intelligence
  • 6G mobile communications

Guo Guoping stressed that quantum computing is now formally outside of the lab. It is currently acknowledged as a core technology at the national level that is starting an industrialization and real-world implementation phase. The objective is to provide a setting in which Chinese-developed quantum operating systems are accessible to research institutes, academic institutions, and private developers globally to promote collaborative innovations.

The Legacy of “Origin Wukong”

Origin Pilot’s software capabilities are already being demonstrated on state-of-the-art hardware. The OS is presently installed on China’s independently produced third-generation superconducting quantum computer, the Origin Wukong series. Origin Wukong has offered its application services to the international market and has already had successful commercial deployment at several places in China.

This hardware-software combination has tremendous power. According to reports, China’s most recent superconducting quantum computers are 450 million times faster than the most potent regular supercomputers in the world at solving certain mathematical problems. The development of quantum supply chains that transition from “lab research” to industrial application depends on this performance level.

Building a Global Quantum Community

China is extending an invitation to the international scientific community to join its quantum adventure by making Origin Pilot available for download online. According to the Anhui research center, this open-download paradigm will enable universities and research institutes around the world to get beyond the “development barriers” that have impeded the expansion of the quantum environment in the past.

The development of new growth engines through frontier technologies continues to be the key priority as the world enters the 15th Five-Year Plan era. Origin Pilot’s launch guarantees that China is developing the “steering and control systems” (the operating system) as well as the “engines” (the quantum hardware) required to negotiate the challenges of the quantum era.
