Leonardo Launches Solvers Wanted to push Quantum Innovation

To close the gap between quantum theory and practical application, Leonardo starts the “Solvers Wanted” challenge

Overview

“Beyond Classical Limits” is a new Solvers Wanted challenge launched by Leonardo’s technology business to promote quantum imaging, communication, and sensing. By finding scalable, reliable solutions in quantum technologies and photonics, this project aims to close the gap between theoretical laboratory experiments and practical implementations. Researchers and start-ups are welcome to propose creative ideas for quantum LiDAR algorithms, optical connections, and modeling techniques. Successful candidates will get the opportunity to work with the firm’s professionals to produce a Proof of Concept and receive financial awards of up to €30,000. In addition, winners have access to the Leonardo Innovation Labs’ specialized infrastructure and expert mentoring. This initiative demonstrates the company’s dedication to open innovation and the search for cutting-edge technological advancements.

The Need for Quantum Information

Leonardo is putting itself at the forefront of the quantum revolution as the world’s technology environment changes. The business believes that the key drivers of the upcoming generation of image, communication, and sensing applications are quantum technologies and sophisticated photonic systems. The sources assert that these technologies have the intrinsic capacity to significantly surpass traditional approaches in three crucial areas: information content, accuracy, and resilience.

But there is still a big obstacle. Although quantum prototypes have shown great promise in controlled lab conditions, there is still a significant technological obstacle to their use in unpredictable real-world circumstances. These challenges are the focus of Leonardo’s new challenge, which aims to transform experimental prototypes into scalable, dependable, and useful solutions.

Three Pillars of Innovation

The task is a focused search for knowledge in three high-priority areas rather than a broad call for ideas:

  1. Quantum Sensing Modeling and Innovative Solutions: Looking for methods to improve our ability to measure and detect physical quantities with previously unheard-of accuracy.
  2. Free-Space Optical Links and Quantum Communications: Using quantum mechanics to improve security while meeting the demand for fast, secure data transfer.
  3. Algorithms and Techniques for Real-Time DVE Quantum LiDAR: Emphasizing “Degraded Visual Environment” (DVE) capabilities, which are critical for helicopters and aircraft operating in low-visibility environments such as smoke, dust, or torrential rain.

To address these issues, Leonardo is enlisting the help of a wide range of skills, including entrepreneurs, self-employed researchers, and start-ups with the quick thinking and specific expertise needed to progress photonics and quantum physics.

Pathways to Partnership: Prizes and Opportunities

In addition to offering monetary rewards, the “Solvers Wanted” portal gives users direct access to Leonardo’s industrial ecosystem. There are two main tracks for the competition:

  • The Technology Challenge: A cash donation of €30,000 will be given to the winner of this category. More significantly, they will be granted access to the Leonardo Innovation Labs and begin a 12-month partnership with the business to create an official Proof of Concept (PoC).
  • The Infrastructure Challenge: This competition is designed for those who require certain technological settings in order to thrive. The winner gets a €10,000 award and gets to test and improve their solutions using Leonardo’s specialized infrastructure.

In addition to these awards, recipients will receive direct assistance in launching their solutions into the market from Leonardo’s Team for Innovation and brand promotion at significant industry events.

A Record Year for Innovation at Leonardo

For Leonardo’s “Open Innovation” policy, this quantum challenge comes at a time of unparalleled activity. With almost 1,000 entries, the business recently revealed that its Innovation Award 2025 had achieved a record-breaking milestone, indicating a high level of participation from the worldwide IT community.

The company’s strategic and financial well-being reflects this momentum. The Board of Directors examined the preliminary 2025 findings on February 25, 2026, and found that long-term growth and industrial planning were consistently prioritized. In addition, Leonardo keeps growing its global presence and network of partners. Some recent highlights include a high-profile deal with Saudi Arabia over the C-27J MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) and a big agreement with the Indra Group to work together on cyber defense.

Leonardo Innovation Labs’ Function

The Leonardo Innovation Labs network and the davinci-1 supercomputer are essential to the achievement of these projects. These centers are intended to promote technology transfer and cooperative research across Leonardo’s several business divisions, including Cyber & Security, Electronics, Helicopters, Aeronautics, and Space.

In allowing outside “solvers,” Leonardo hopes to incorporate state-of-the-art quantum research into its larger objectives, including the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) and other sustainability projects like the supply chain’s decarbonization (LEAP).

In conclusion, looking for tomorrow’s solvers

An essential part of Leonardo’s strategy to keep a technical advantage in a world market that is becoming more and more competitive is the “Solvers Wanted” challenge. The business is aiming for “beyond classical” innovations that will shape the future of aerospace and defense by concentrating on quantum sensing and communication rather than merely making small, incremental advances.

As the due date draws near, the international scientific community is urged to submit ideas that may revolutionize how we see, interact with, and safeguard our planet. For Leonardo, the message is unmistakable: the future is quantum, and the hunt for its designers has officially started.

What is Solvers Wanted

Leonardo established the specialized digital hub Solvers Wanted to hunt for cutting-edge technology solutions from outside partners such as research facilities, startups, and universities. The platform uses a demand-driven innovation approach and presents unique technological problems in domains including artificial intelligence, quantum sensing, and aerospace. From early-stage research partnerships to the industrial use of existing patents, participants can enter a variety of competition categories. Innovators who successfully complete these tasks are awarded direct contracts and get recognition by becoming members of the official Leonardo Team for Innovation network. In the end, this program expedites the process of finding and evaluating innovative ideas to further the group’s strategic industrial objectives.
