Phasecraft Reveal The Mondrian For Logistics And Finance

The Mondrian

Phasecraft Unveils Mondrian: Quantum-Enhanced Software Signals Near-Term Commercial Utility

Officially, optimisation driven by quantum technology is no longer a pipe fantasy. Phasecraft, the world’s top provider of quantum algorithms, made a big announcement last night at the Royal Society when they unveiled Mondrian, a ground-breaking software platform that speeds up classical optimisation for difficult industrial problems in a variety of industries, including logistics, finance, and energy. Senior government representatives and important business executives attended the launch, which represents a crucial turning point for industries that depend on finding solutions to big, complicated optimisation problems often in a short amount of time.

Phasecraft’s first-ever quantum-enhanced software platform is called Mondrian. It presents a novel hybrid paradigm that combines the essential resilience and dependability of well-established classical algorithms with the unadulterated processing power of modern quantum processors. The platform’s primary innovation is this “quantum-enhanced” strategy.

The Hybrid Innovation: Quantum Exploration Meets Classical Robustness

The “noisy” nature and tiny scale of present hardware, which prohibits problems from being fully addressed on a quantum chip, are the main challenges facing commercial quantum computing today. Mondrian cleverly takes advantage of this restriction.

The platform employs a hybrid workflow in which the result of a quantum algorithm is delivered straight into an existing classical routine, rather than requiring completely fault-tolerant quantum computers. The exploration phase is where the quantum processor shines because of its capacity to quickly and concurrently explore large solution areas. A thorough collection of potential solutions could be produced by this quantum subroutine for a challenging combinatorial optimisation challenge.

Then, depending on its shown stability and scalability, the classical component takes over. This part assesses the potential solutions that the quantum device offers, weeds out those that are judged impractical given actual circumstances, and iteratively enhances the best outcomes. While the system as a whole gains from the quantum speed-up during the search phase, our method guarantees that the final solution satisfies all relevant real-world restrictions. This hybrid approach promises a significant reduction in total processing time based on preliminary benchmarks. This approach has demonstrated the ability to outperform purely classical solvers by up to three orders of magnitude for some benchmark problems.

Smarter Optimization for a Greener Grid

The intriguing first use case for Mondrian is the energy network, which reflects the exact type of large-scale optimisation problem the platform was intended to address. These intricacies are best exemplified by the UK power system, which is dealing with growing demand, a boom in the production of renewable energy, and a growing desire for smarter infrastructure.

Phasecraft worked together with the National Energy System Operator (NESO) of the United Kingdom to develop Mondrian. Because of this collaboration, the platform was modified to help grid operators with a number of crucial operational duties:

  • Calculations of power exchange figuring out the best way to distribute electricity throughout the intricate network in order to reduce energy losses and successfully balance supply and demand.
  • Wilful islanding determining whether particular grid subsets can be effectively separated during system failures in order to maintain stability and minimise extensive disturbance.
  • The positioning or siting of renewable determining the best location for new assets, such as solar or wind power installations and the required sensors, in order to maximise efficacy and efficiency over the long run.

In pilot tests, the platform had an instantaneous and significant impact. For these practical use cases investigated with NESO, Mondrian achieved speedups of up to 1,000 times compared to traditional approaches. For instance, it took less than ten minutes to solve a power exchange problem that usually required many hours of computation. Operators may react to operational changes and market signals much more quickly and dynamically because to this capabilities. Mondrian makes a direct contribution to the creation of a more robust, economical, and eventually environmentally friendly grid by improving network efficiency, lowering energy losses, and strategically placing assets.

Extending Utility Beyond Energy

Although the energy sector offers a crucial initial application, Phasecraft stressed that Mondrian’s adaptability guarantees its usefulness spans a broader horizon, suggesting innovations in other sectors dealing with significant optimisation issues.

In logistics, the software may streamline supply-chain flows, optimize intricate delivery routes, and enhance storage layouts, all of which immediately result in lower fuel usage and better service levels. Mondrian can handle complex problems for the finance sector, including complex risk assessment, portfolio optimisation, and sophisticated algorithmic trading methods that require controlling large constraint sets. Additionally, communications networks can use the software to properly schedule transmissions, manage changing network topologies in real-time, and allot capacity.

Strategic Backing and Commercial Rollout

The government provided substantial strategic support for Mondrian’s development, underscoring the technology’s strategic significance as a link between scholarly research and commercial implementation. A sizeable £1.2 million award from the UK Government’s Quantum Catalyst Fund provided the initial funding.

The platform’s commercialization strategy has also been revealed by Phasecraft. A safe, cloud-based access paradigm will be used to access Mondrian. “Their rolling out secure access to Mondrian over the coming month and invite energy, infrastructure, and logistics operators to reach out to get involved,” said Ashley Montanaro, co-founder and CEO of Phasecraft, confirming the impending deployment. He stated that the launch was “a major step towards commercial quantum utility, showing how enhanced quantum algorithms can unlock near-term breakthroughs across sectors that face large-scale optimisation problems” .

In Conclusion

In order to address real-world computational difficulties, Mondrian provides clear evidence that the strategic union of quantum and classical computing can produce observable, immediate advantages. Phasecraft has effectively carved out a commercial niche by utilising the exploratory capability offered by noisy, current-generation quantum processors while preserving the existing conventional algorithms’ demonstrated dependability. This approach successfully avoids the crucial, protracted period of time usually needed to realise completely fault-tolerant quantum devices.

Mondrian is anticipated to propel a new generation of optimisation tools that raise efficiency, resilience, and sustainability to previously unheard-of levels as more operators in the energy, infrastructure, finance, and logistics sectors embrace the platform.
