What Is Commvault & New Post-Quantum Cryptography Abilities

What is Commvault? A powerful data security platform now strengthened with post-quantum cryptography to combat emerging threats.

Commvault, a top supplier of hybrid cloud data protection and cyber resilience solutions, has revealed major improvements to its post-quantum cryptography (PQC) capabilities. These developments are intended to enable governments and organisations to proactively protect long-term, extremely sensitive data against a new breed of impending, yet as-yet-unknown, cyberthreats. One of the first cyber resilience providers to enable PQC is Commvault.

Support for the Hamming Quasi-Cyclic (HQC) algorithm is the main component of this important update. An innovative code-based method called HQC was created especially to protect against the pernicious “harvest now, decrypt later” threat. In this kind of assault, malevolent actors intercept and store encrypted network communication now with the specific goal of decrypting it later, when quantum computers have the enormous capacity to crack traditional encryption techniques.

Commvault’s existing cryptographic agility (crypto-agility) platform, first unveiled in August 2024, is a logical extension of this increased PQC functionality. Since its beginnings, Commvault has supported several quantum-resistant encryption standards based on NIST recommendations. Famous algorithms include FALCON, SPHINCS+, CRYSTALS-Dilithium, and CRYSTALS-Kyber. The Commvault Cloud platform’s inbuilt crypto-agility framework gives users the vital flexibility to handle quickly changing threats without having to completely redesign their current systems.

“The quantum threat isn’t theoretical,” Commvault Chief Security Officer Bill O’Connell confirmed. He underlined that Commvault was one of the first cyber resilience providers to tackle the issues posed by post-quantum computing. By adding new algorithms like HQC and improving their crypto-agility architecture, Commvault hopes to give users the tools they need to confidently traverse this challenging environment. O’Connell stated that “as quantum computing threats emerge, we intend to help our customers keep their data protected.” This is Commvault’s stated goal.

The rapid development of quantum computing highlights the urgent need for proactive PQC adoption. Utilising the concepts of quantum mechanics, quantum computing processes data and resolves complex issues that would take decades for traditional computers to finish. These technological developments provide previously unheard-of security risks even as they offer enormous possibilities. Potentially, threat actors might use the capabilities of quantum computing to crack and unlock conventional encryption techniques, making the security measures in place outdated.

Strong statistics emphasise the urgency even more:

  • A noteworthy 63% of technology and cybersecurity professionals believe that quantum computing will raise or change cybersecurity threats, per the Information Systems Audit and Control Association’s (ISACA) Quantum Computing Pulse Poll.
  • Furthermore, half of these professionals believe that there would be new regulatory and compliance issues as a result of quantum computing.

The conclusion that “now is the time to prepare and take action” is strongly supported by these data.

Businesses that require the long-term preservation of sensitive data stand to gain the most from Commvault’s enhanced PQC capabilities. These include industries including government, healthcare, and banking. The new features offer a variety of protections intended to strengthen network tunnels against possible quantum-based intrusions. Additionally, clients can efficiently identify and categorise their data with Commvault’s integrated Risk Analysis features, allowing them to pinpoint the exact areas where these cutting-edge cryptographic safeguards are most important. Customers’ adoption of these new features is made easier by their ease of installation, which frequently just requires a checkbox selection.

Customers and industry experts have praised Commvault’s progressive strategy. “Quantum readiness has become a business imperative,” said Phil Goodwin, Research VP at IDC, especially for companies that handle data that needs to remain sensitive for many decades. Goodwin added that Commvault is “at the forefront among data protection software vendors in proactively addressing quantum threats” because of its early adoption of quantum-resistant cryptography.

Customer endorsements highlight the benefits of Commvault’s innovations even more:

  • The Nevada Department of Transportation’s Deputy Chief Information Security Officer, Jeff Day, praised Commvault as a “invaluable partner” in their quest for improved cyber resilience. He emphasised that Commvault’s crypto-agility framework and leadership in implementing PQC are precisely what is required to satisfy strict government security requirements and safeguard extremely sensitive data from new quantum threats.
  • “Great confidence” was expressed by Peter Hands, Chief Information Security Officer at the British Medical Association, that their vital data would be safeguarded “now and well into the future” by Commvault’s quick integration of quantum standards, particularly HQC. Additionally, he emphasised how crucial Commvault’s dedication to crypto-agility is for medical institutions such as the BMA.

Commvault Cloud clients may now instantly access Commvault’s latest post-quantum cryptography features, including complete support for NIST’s HQC algorithm. Customers using software version CPR 2024 (11.36) and later can now easily adopt quantum-resistant protection. With a platform that combines data protection and rapid recovery at enterprise scale, across any workload, at the lowest total cost of ownership, Commvault, known as the “gold standard in cyber resilience,” assists more than 100,000 organisations in maintaining data safety and business resilience.
